SMOKING CESSATION DAY

February 9 is celebrated as "Smoking Cessation Day" every year. It is important in terms of the harms of using tobacco and tobacco products, which risk both individual and social health, and raising awareness about quitting.

Tobacco products, which are the most widely used addictive substance in our country as well as in the world; It is among the leading causes of preventable diseases and premature death, such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), especially lung cancer.

Every year, more than 8 million individuals in the world lose their lives due to the use of tobacco products. 1.2 million of these deaths are the result of exposure to tobacco product smoke, not the result of tobacco product use. According to the estimates of the World Health Organization; 700 million children, that is almost half of the children in the world, are exposed to tobacco smoke and every year 65,000 children die before the age of 5 due to respiratory infections caused by passive exposure. All types of tobacco products are harmful and there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke.

Quitting the use of tobacco products provides great benefits at any time and at any age. From the first day of quitting smoking, changes begin in the lungs and heart, high heart rate returns to normal, blood pressure decreases, carbon monoxide level in the bloodstream returns to normal and the immune system strengthens over time. Within 2-12 weeks, circulation improves, lung capacity increases, cough and shortness of breath complaints decrease.

Tobacco addiction is a strong addiction, but it is possible to get rid of this addiction with proven scientific methods. The Ministry of Health provides uninterrupted support to individuals who use tobacco products to get rid of this addiction through the ALO 171 Smoking Cessation Hotline and smoking cessation polyclinics.

Each of the efforts to protect the whole society, especially our children and youth, from the harms of tobacco products is very valuable; As our University's Coordination of The Fight Against Addiction, our aim is to raise awareness about the harms of tobacco and tobacco products on the 9th of February to quit smoking, and to motivate and encourage our students to quit smoking with the "Young Green Crescent Student Club" activities.
