Green Crescent Week: Fighting Addiction Saves Lives

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurten Elkin, Coordinator for Combating Addiction at Istanbul Gelisim University, made statements regarding Green Crescent Week (1–7 March). Every year, the first week of March is celebrated as Green Crescent Week. This week is used to raise public awareness about addiction, encourage healthy lifestyle habits, and protect especially young people from harmful habits. Smoking, alcohol use, substance use, and technology addiction are among the most serious public health problems today.

Addiction: Not Only an Individual but a Societal Health Problem
Addiction is the inability of a person to control a substance or behavior and the continuation of it despite knowing its harms. However, from a public health perspective, the issue is much larger:
• Early deaths
• Burden of chronic diseases
• Increase in healthcare expenditures
• Family problems and social losses
• Loss of workforce

How Do Addictions Affect Health?
Addiction does not only reduce a person’s quality of life; in the long term it leads to serious health problems such as cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, liver failure, cancer, and mental disorders. It also has negative effects on social life and working life.

Cigarettes and Tobacco Products: The Silent Killer
Cigarettes and other tobacco products are among the leading causes of preventable diseases. The risk of lung cancer, COPD, heart disease, and stroke related to smoking is very high. Nicotine increases dopamine release by affecting the brain’s reward system and creates a strong cycle of addiction. From a public health perspective, the most critical point is this: a large proportion of tobacco-related diseases are preventable. Preventive measures include smoke-free air policies, school-based education programs, and smoking cessation clinics.

Alcohol and the Facts
In recent years, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized in its statements that there is “no safe level of alcohol consumption.” Alcohol is associated with many diseases such as liver cirrhosis, breast and digestive system cancers, hypertension, and mental health disorders. From a public health perspective, the alcohol problem affects not only the individual who consumes it but also brings secondary social consequences such as traffic accidents, domestic violence, and job loss.

Behavioral Addictions: A New Generation Risk
Technology and gambling addiction, although they do not involve substances, affect the brain’s reward system and create similar addiction mechanisms. Especially in children and adolescents, they may lead to outcomes such as sleep disorders, attention problems, decline in academic achievement, and social isolation. Therefore, preventive health should cover not only substance use but also behavioral risks.

Healthy Living, Prevention, and Support
The most effective way to combat addictions is to take preventive measures and seek support. Family physicians, psychologists, and the guidance services offered by the Green Crescent should be the first points of contact for those who want to protect themselves from addiction or quit. Let us remember: addictions silently take over our lives, but recognizing them early and receiving support is always possible.

The Role of Family Physicians and the Green Crescent
Two of the strongest supports in protecting against and combating addictions:

Family Physicians: They know the individual, evaluate risks, and provide guidance for protection from addiction and for quitting.

The Green Crescent: It provides guidance and counseling services. Through educational programs and awareness campaigns, it informs young people and families.

A Healthy Society Is Possible with Independent Individuals
Green Crescent Week is not only about saying “no” to harmful habits, but also a call to spread a culture of healthy living.

Let us remember:
The strongest treatment is never starting.
