Ayşe Mücella SOYDAN, Lecturer in the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Istanbul Gelişim University, shared about the life of Ord. Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman UZMAN.


Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Uzman was born on May 5, 1884 in Sofu.
He graduated from the Military Medical School in 1904. After his successful studies at Gulhane Military Hospital, he made professional studies in Berlin and Munich in 1908. He returned to his homeland in 1911 and worked in Gülhane Hospital. He participated in the Balkan War. During the First World War, he worked as chief physician at Şişli Hospital (after leaving the French), which was affiliated to the French, and later as a neurology physician at Haydarpasa Hospital. During the occupation years, he was the chief physician of Toptasi and Zeynep Kamil Hospitals.
Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman, with his work with young physicians in Toptasi Bimarhanesi, succeeded in changing the old system treatments and became a school on mental and neurological disorders. It has enabled its students to study abroad. Later, he became a person who trained these students in the field of mental and neurological disorders, who was the head of all the hospitals in Istanbul and most of the hospitals in Anatolia at that time.
Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Uzman is a mental health specialist who established the first modern mental health hospital in Turkey. In the period that started in 1924 and lasted until 1927, he transferred the Bimarhane from Toptaşı to the Resadiye Barracks buildings in Bakırkoy, which was considered outside the city at that time. He continued as the chief physician of this hospital which he was the founder, until 1941.
Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Uzman became the Ordinary Professor of Psychiatry Clinic in 1932. At the same time, he continued to be the chief physician of Sisli French Hospital since 1918.
Prof. Ord. Mazhar Osman has books like Medicine, Psychiatry, Mental Diseases, Nervous Diseases (two volumes), "Cinnet-i Mesahir-maupassant", "Sanitary Stories", "Conferences", "The Fight Against Leprosy". He also has a book that he translated called "Sunstroke and Freezing", and a report on "Early Dementia with Cannbibal" prepared at the request of the Society of Nations. In addition, he has medical and non-medical articles in the journals "Tababeti Seriyiye", "Tababeti Haza" and "Sıhhi Sahifeler", of which he is the editor.
Prof. Ord. Mazhar Osman was the chairman of the Society for Fight Against Alcoholism (Yesilay), of which he was the founder, for 25 years, of the Turkish Medical Society for 7 years, of the Society for Mental and Neurological Diseases, of which he was one of the founders, for more than 25 years and also a member of the Health Council.
Prof. Ord. Mazhar Osman Uzman died on August 31, 1951 in Istanbul.
